Michelle Reyes-Vasquez graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cedar Crest College in 2018 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and certificates in Child Welfare and Crime and Community Mapping. She continued her education at Rutgers University School of Social Work in New Brunswick, NJ where she received her Masters in Social Work with an emphasis on children, youth, and families in May 2020.
During Michelle’s undergraduate career she worked with children and families involved in the foster care system as well as with youth involved in the juvenile justice system. Michelle’s graduate career included two years of fieldwork providing services to children, adolescents, and families. She was a part of a multidisciplinary child study team and was a psychotherapist at a private practice offering individual therapy sessions to children, adolescents, and young adults.
Michelle specializes in working with children, teens, and young adults dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, loss, school-related issues, behavioral difficulties, and issues related to first-generation children of immigrants. When working with younger clients, Michelle’s strategies include using evidence-based techniques such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and interactive play therapy through the use of games, books, art and activities. She ensures that parents of her young clients are included throughout the treatment process. Michelle is bilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish.
A Word from Michelle:
“My approach as a therapist is warm, client centered, and strength-based. In my work, I focus on building rapport with my clients as I see this to be one of the most important steps in the therapeutic process. It is a priority for my clients to feel safe and accepted during our work together. My role as a therapist is to provide guidance and support, but ultimately I see my clients as the experts of their own lives. I will listen and help to identify your personal strengths in pursuit of achieving your individual goals and overall positive self development."
